Homemade Horchata

This easy-to-make, creamy rice and cinnamon beverage is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients
  

  • 1 ½ cups uncooked long-grain white rice Provides the base for the drink
  • 2 Mexican cinnamon sticks Adds a signature flavor to the drink
  • 4 cups hot water Helps blend the rice and cinnamon
  • 2 cups milk or almond milk (For creaminess)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract Gives a fragrant depth to the flavor
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon Enhances the cinnamon flavor
  • – ½ cups granulated sugar Sweeten to your taste

Equipment

  • 1 Blender For grinding the rice and cinnamon sticks.
  • 1 Fine Mesh Strainer For straining out the rice solids cleanly.
  • 1 Pitcher or container with a lid For soaking the rice overnight and storing the horchata.

Method
 

  1. Add rice, hot water, and cinnamon sticks to a blender. Blend until the rice and cinnamon sticks are coarsely ground.
  2. Add the remaining water to the blender and blend again.
  3. Pour the blended mixture into a pitcher or container with a lid and refrigerate overnight or for at least 8 hours.
  4. Once ready, strain the rice mixture through a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a pitcher, discarding the rice.
  5. Stir in the milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar to your preference.
  6. Chill until ready to serve. Stir before serving and serve over ice.
