Ingredients

  • ¼ cup brown sugar packed for deeper sweetness
  • ¼ cup reduced-sodium soy sauce balances saltiness while keeping flavor bold
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil adds nutty aroma
  • ¾ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes adjust for heat preference
  • teaspoon ground ginger provides warm background spice
  • 1 ½ tablespoons vegetable oil neutral oil for browning
  • 5 cloves garlic minced (freshly chopped for best flavor)
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef 80/20 preferred for juiciness
  • 3 green onions thinly sliced (use both white and green parts)
  • teaspoon sesame seeds for light crunch and garnish

Equipment

  • 1 Cast iron skillet or heavy skillet Holds high heat for quick, even browning; cast iron is ideal but not required
  • 1 Small mixing bowl Used to whisk the sauce ingredients until smooth
  • 1 Wooden spoon or spatula Helps break up the beef while cooking without damaging the pan

Method

  1. Whisk the brown sugar, soy sauce, sesame oil, red pepper flakes, and ground ginger together in a small bowl until smooth.
  2. Warm the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat, then add the garlic and stir constantly until fragrant.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until fully browned, breaking it apart as it cooks; drain off excess fat if needed.
  4. Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet and fold in the sliced green onions, letting everything gently simmer until well coated and heated through.
  5. Remove from heat and serve right away, finishing with a sprinkle of sesame seeds and extra green onions if desired.
