Ingredients

  • For the fritters
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour for structure and texture
  • ½ cup granulated sugar adds sweetness
  • 2 ¼ tsp. baking powder for leavening
  • 2 tsp. ground cinnamon for warm, spiced flavor
  • 1 ¼ tsp. salt to balance sweetness
  • 2 large eggs helps bind the ingredients together
  • ¾ cup whole milk for moisture
  • 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter melted (adds richness)
  • 2 tsp. vanilla extract for depth of flavor
  • 2 Granny Smith apples peeled and diced (provides tartness and texture)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional) (for a sweet finish)
  • For the glaze
  • 1 ½ cups powdered sugar for sweetness
  • ¼ tsp. salt balances sweetness
  • ¼ tsp. vanilla extract for flavor
  • 3 Tbsp. whole milk helps create the glaze texture

Equipment

  • 1 Dutch oven For frying the fritters in hot oil.
  • 1 Mixing bowls One for wet ingredients, one for dry.
  • 1 Fork For beating the eggs.
  • 1 Paper towels For draining excess oil.
  • 1 Whisk For making the glaze smooth.
  • 1 Slotted spoon For safely removing the fritters from the hot oil.

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs, then add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and fold gently until just combined.
  4. Add the diced apples and fold them into the batter gently until evenly distributed.
  5. Heat a couple of inches of canola oil in a Dutch oven over medium heat until it reaches 350°F.
  6. Test the oil by dropping a small bit of batter into it. If it sizzles and rises to the surface, the oil is ready.
  7. Using a tablespoon, drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil, making sure to not overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2 to 2 ½ minutes until golden brown, flipping them occasionally if needed.
  8. Remove the fritters from the oil and let them drain on paper towels.
  9. For the glaze (if using): In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, salt, vanilla, and milk until smooth.
  10. Dust the fritters generously with powdered sugar or dip them in the glaze. Serve warm!
